ScamScan.org.uk - Taking back the Internet!Today's Internet is a very different thing to the basic communication medium envisaged by it's creators back in the 1960's. Intended as a reliable military network, adapted by Universities for a world-wide academic network, promoted by companies for business and consumers for pleasure, it is now finding itself exploited by unscrupulous people intent on stealing your money, your identity, or even your computer! Very few people can say that they haven't received an email, or seen an online forum post offering something for nothing, whether it's cheap drugs, get-rich-quick schemes, free music players or laptops, or the classic, free pornography. At best, these are annoyances, and at worst are rip-offs, or methods to infect your computer with programs that could steal your passwords and bring up even more adverts! The main problem with the people running these schemes (usually run from other countries) is that they're very hard to track down and even harder to stop. Armed with throw-away identities, the scammers can 'disappear' simply by discarding one set of accounts and can start again immediately with another set. Until all of the law enforcement agencies around the world work together to combat them, they'll carry on trying to steal as much as they can. However, it's not all over for the Internet - with a little care, and a little education, it's possible to avoid the traps these unscrupulous people leave and take full advantage of the potential of the Internet. Not all good offers on the Internet are scams, but not all of them are genuine. This site is intended to help you protect your computer - and your money! |
